What are wisdom teeth and when should they be removed? Wisdom teeth are normal teeth at the very back of the jaw. They usually don’t show up until 18 years of age. Because they are the last teeth to come through, sometimes there is not enough room left for them in the jaw which causes them to come through at the wrong angle.
This can cause food to accumulate, thus , irritating the tissues around them (pericoronitis). If in this condition lasts too long, an infection can develop. In this case, an antibiotic can temporarily settle the symptoms of the infection but the problem will return if you don’t have the wisdom tooth removed.
